Biography

Farhan Wilayat Butt a humanitarian activist from Karachi, Pakistan, is a prominent figure on the international stage, dedicated for many years to solidarity projects, the promotion of human rights, and interreligious dialogue. His work spans multiple areas, with particular focus on marginalized communities and social, health, and environmental emergencies in both Asia and Africa.

One of the most significant initiatives he has led is the indh Water Relief Project, created to address the severe water crisis in rural villages of Sindh, where the only available water was brackish and hazardous to health.

Through the construction of over 400 wells and the installation of manual pumps, he has ensured access to clean drinking water for thousands of people, dramatically improving living conditions, especially for women and children. This project has received international recognition, including being ranked among the best community service projects by the Project Management Institute (USA), the SATHA Innovation Award (Italy), the Gusi Peace Prize (Philippines), and the honorary title of Kentucky Colonel conferred by the governor of the eponymous U.S. state.

A similar initiative, the Narayanpura Water Relief Project, provided chilled and filtered water to over 10,000 residents of a Hindu colony in Karachi, a community particularly affected by the summer heatwaves. Farhan Wilayat Butt has also launched economic support projects for widows by distributing sewing machines, provided wheelchairs to people with disabilities, and promoted campaigns defending the rights of transgender individuals, who often face discrimination and violence in Pakistan.

In 2016, he established a fund to support retired television artists, often forgotten and without assistance, in an effort to restore dignity and recognition to key figures in Pakistan’s popular culture. In 2017, he expanded his work to Africa, initiating food distribution programs in Nigeria, with plans to extend the initiative to Sudan and Ethiopia

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he organized an extensive network for the free distribution of food and essential supplies to the most vulnerable populations affected by the lockdown across various regions of Pakistan, demonstrating tireless commitment even in the most critical times. His efforts during this period were recognized by The Green Organization (UK) as part of the “My Hero” campaign, and led to the symbolic planting of a tree in his name as part of the United Nations Billion Tree Campaign.

For his humanitarian merits, Farhan Wilayat Butt has received numerous awards from international organizations, including the Green Awardfor best environmental practices, the HBL PSL Hamaray Heroes Award during the 2022 Pakistan Super League, and the title of “Warrior of Humanity” conferred by Indian human rights organizations.
